It is much like a take-home exam that won't due in 1-2 years. The only difference is you have to make your own questions.

Not only you are smart enough to make your own decisions, but also you need luck and hard work with low pay, long hours.. :-)
Glad to know someone who understands this miserable life.
I just want to share what I read from somewhere saying that PhD means Process of Human Developement till your dissertation. sound great but how about Permanant Head Damage? :-)
