iPass

This is nothing related to iPod, iTune, nor iPhone. I just simply wanted to tell you that i passed my car's emission test.

You heard me complaining about fixing my car's exhaust system. Well, today, I went for emission test. A few words from the emission test center justified my spending of 800 bucks to fix the car. Baltimore is the 6th most polluted city in the US. Because of this stringent emission testing system the State of Maryland rights off 70 tons of pollution everyday. Yea, 70 tons. I don't know how did they calculate it. If you want to know check it out at http://www.mde.state.md.us/

I breathed even more deeply to get my share of cleaner air. :)

First Snow of the Season

After a long last, we had snow in Baltimore. Snow started falling later last night. When I woke up in the morning everything's covered with white flakes. Luckily, the snow was not that think and I didn't need to dig out my car from snow. Nevertheless, it was completely covered with it. I took some pictures and will post it later.

Cost of Going Green

"Go Green" . A nice and desirable buzz word. But, nothing comes for free. I was summoned to get my car tested for emission. It is required in Maryland that cars do not emit harmful gases more than the limit.

Even the top notch and brand new car engines still emit those harmful gases in excess of the state required level. So, another instrument called catalytic converter is installed in the exhaust system to purify the dirts exhaled from the engine.

My car's catalytic converter has worn out and I had to replace it together with part of the exhaust system. The initial estimate from a Toyota-recognized garage was $ 3300 - almost the price that I paid for the car. Luckily, I found another garage that could fix the thing with $ 800. Still it is about the 20% of the price of the car.

This is ridiculous. There should be cheaper ways to go green. Or else, not many people could ever afford it. Shall we just use our foot to go green?

Haircut

"Hey yo... Haircut is something not to blog"

"Well ... I don't know what to write ... so ... "

One afternoon in December I called my Barber and made an appointment. (fyi. No appointment no haircut.) I should have gone earlier since my last haircut was more than 3 months ago. Almost all the friends from school winked at my long and bulky hair. Some close ones were telling me straight that I should go to Barber shop.

Oh. I should tell you about one of my many nick names. "Karly Kauk" given by my naughty highschool friends. Yea, when my hair get longer, it becomes like ar-tar-pu-se. That's how I got a peculiar nickname in highschool.

Ok, let's get back to my recent haircuts. My last one was in Singapore at a Burmese salon. You may ask why didn't I cut my hair when I was in Yangon. I was too busy hanging out with friends and totally forgot to cut my hair. Why am I making a big deal out of haircut? Well, it is expensive here in the US. So, I should have budgeted wisely by cutting hair when I was in Yangon. Anyway, it was nice in Singapore. The salon was like the usual ones in Yangon.

I have a tendency to go to the same Barber as much as I could. In Myanmar, I had only changed four barbers in my life time. They were all linked to my family moving from one place to the next.

This habit hasn't changed much, and I go to Tenpachi every time I need a haircut since I first came to Baltimore in 2002. A cheap (to the US standard), but, nice one that targets poor university students. The price used to be $ 10 in 2002, however, it is $ 13 now. Inflation! It is everywhere. This small cozy salon is in a place called Hopkins square - a place Hopkins student like to hang out. There is a cafe, a post-office, photocopy, a stationary shop, a restaurant, and a sandwich shop. It is much like Hle-dan of Yangon except the fact that it doesn't have wet-thar-dote-htoe. There even are outdoor chairs & tables set up during summer. No. You definitely don't want to sit outside at this time of the year.

Tenpachi has only 3-4 chairs for haircut and one reclining chair for shampoo. Strangely enough, they shampoo hair before cutting it. Anyway, they are the fastest of all my barbers. It took less than 15 minutes to finish my hair. This time my hair got cut pretty short. So, I won't need to go there for another 3 months.

I am counting my time in Baltimore and the unit I use is "Barber visit". Thus, I told myself that I will be home after next 4-5 visits to Tenpachi.

Cherry Picking

I am playing with Picasa 2.0 to collage pictures and thought that you might like to see this. These pictures were taken during the summer of 2005. Some of my friends from the school of public health organized this cherry picking trip. We drove about 15 miles north of Baltimore to reach that farm.

It was exciting and fun. There were two different kinds of cherries; sweet & sour. Darkish red were sweet and bright red were sour, if I remember correctly. Can you guess how sweet were the cherries that I picked? Yea, they were as sweet as my smiles. :p

We were given a bucket each to collect cherries and had to pay by weight. One good thing was they did not weigh us when we got into the farm. So, they had no idea how much cherries we ate while we were picking them. A good hint for you guys/gals to consider if you ever go to cherry picking.

On our way back, the driver of our car made a sudden left turn (the cars drive on the same side of the road as in Yangon) and we were almost hit by a car from incoming traffic. Luckily, nothing serious happened except the lady driver from the other car almost got a heart attack.

That's all for cherry picking. Next time I will probably talk about wine tasting.

i started blogging on a cold winter day

I am such a late adopter since I am thinking of blogging six years after the blogging revolution begins. Anyway, I will try my best to blog.

I woke up early today and the first thing I remembered was I had to move my car from left side of the road to the right side of the road. There is a long story behind this ritual. The Baltimore City cleans the street in front of my house (ie. Calvert Street) on Mondays & Tuesdays. Thus, cars are not allowed to park on left side of the street on Mondays and right side of the street on Tuesdays. What would happen if you forgot and parked on the wrong side of the road on a particular day of the week? Simple. Fine of $ 42. Now, you may guess did I ever pay any fine. Yea, you are right. I had to pay fine some months ago. From then on, I add moving my car in my to do list.

Actually, what I really wanted to tell you today was it was a terribly cold day in Baltimore. Temperature is 32 degree Fahrenheit - yea , freezing point. I was too lazy to wear a shoe so I went out with a pair of flipflop (that's what Americans call our slippers) to move my car. It was freezing cold and I had to run back into my house. Hopefully we will see snow soon.

This weather reminds me of Min-Dat and Aye-Sa-Khan during our trips to Mt. Victoria. Wouldn't it be nice if we have snow in Aye-Sa-Khan? I wish.
